This is a project from one of my design classes where I learned to create a wayfinding system for an existing space. For this project, I chose to work on a wayfinding system for a local hotel. Canopy by Hilton is a string of hotels that have locations all over the world, including Grand Rapids, MI. Their hotels are designed beautifully with elements of color, lines, shape, and texture that bring each space together. The architecture and overall design is a modern twist on mid-century modern and scandanavian design. The numerous pops of color make the space feel inviting and lively, which is an ideal style for Canopy because they want to encourage guests to use their space for community purposes.
There are lots of amenities that are available to the public, but they’re not easy to find. There have been navigational issues so implimenting a wayfinding system is essential. This new system will be designed to emulate the clean and stylish look that Canopy captures. The color palette of their space, earthy materials and their signature orange color are all inspiration for the style of the signage. Furthermore, their wayfinding system will have an emphasis on geometric shapes to feel appropriate for their style. Each sign will be small so as not to detract from the space while maintaining an eye-catching quality. Additionally, the signs include icons that are designed in a rounded friendly style to mimic the feeling of this space. Designing signage already makes Canopy a more accessible space, but to improve it further, each sign will inlcude braille to guide visually impaired guests. Point A, B, and C is not always the easiest to pin-point in a hotel because the experience is stuble. With that being said, this project will entail the journey of two guests from the lobby (Point A) to their hotel room (Point B) and to the rooftop bar, Knoop (Point C).
